NOGGLE
.
"Emerging from a dark alley, a humanoid creature the size of a dwarf blocks your path. His disproportionate, donkey-like head is almost the same size as his body, giving him a grotesque appearance. His legs are hairy, and large hooves replace his feet. Armed with a large, rusty kitchen knife, he stares at you with hateful eyes and suddenly lets out a deafening moo, revealing his enormous flat teeth before lunging at you."
.
An old legend says that noggles were once regular humanoids, until a curse cast by feys gave them their hideous appearance. Noggles are above 3 ft. tall and weigh around 110 pounds, with their head alone being over 30 pounds. They are compulsive thieves and fearsome cutthroats, subsisting entirely at the expense of others. It is said that a noggle owns nothing that hasn't previously belonged to someone else. Most are cowardly, violent, greedy, selfish, and noisy.
"Donkeyfolk," as noggles are sometimes called, live on the fringes of humanoid and monstrous-humanoid societies. They make their home in sewers, unfrequented dirty alleys, abandoned barns, inhabited dungeons, and other more or less sordid places, from which they regularly emerge to commit their misdeeds. They sometimes share their environment with raccoonfolks(*), but where the latter are relatively accepted in civilized societies, noggles are almost universally perceived as parasites and a nuisance—even by the raccoonfolks. Occasionally, some unscrupulous thieves' guilds exploit them by force, making them commit various acts of sabotage and other vandalism.
Noggles have their own language, a simple and uncouth dialect consisting of bellows, whinnies, and other very unpleasant moos. Since they tend to argue by talking over each other, their conversations could easily be mistaken for those of cattles gone hysterical. Many of them also learn the language most commonly spoken by their victims. These languages usually include Common, Undercommon, Goblin, Dwarven, Gnomish, Draconian and Elvish, depending on the settlement they occupy.
.
NOGGLE FEVER
A person bitten by a noggle has a 1% chance of contracting a supernatural disease, upon which they will transform into a noggle. This transformation only affects humanoids and monstrous humanoids of small or medium size. The process takes between two and seven days on average, during which the patient suffers from high fevers and slowly changes appearance. After this period, they lose all memory of their past life and any peculiarities they may have had, and become an ordinary noggle in every way.
Otherwise, noggles reproduce normally (there are male and female noggles); this disease therefore remains unexplained to this day. It could be some sort of lycanthropy variant, or a residual consequence of the fey curse mentioned in their legend.
.
NOGGLE CHARACTERS
Noggles are by nature excellent rogues, and most also become assassins. However, they are rarely subtle and silent thieves: many of them are still rough, brute-type bandits, occasionally throwing themselves into melee.
